explorer (DYSTOPIA)Ears swivel toward the rotor-thrum first, flattening low against skull. Body drops into a slink, belly nearly brushing wet concrete, weight shifting to spread across the paw pads so claws don't click on the metal grating underfoot.
Nose works the air — noodle-grease ghost, rust, ozone off the steam vents, and under it something sharper, meaty, worth checking later. The billboard's flicker throws jittery light across puddles; tail gives one slow twitch, gauging shadow versus glare, then curls in tight.
Slip sideways into the deeper dark along the noodle stand's shuttered wall, pressing flank to metal, moving heel-toe toward the alley's back corner where a stack of crates breaks the drone's sightline. Pause there. Wait. Watch the searchlight's sweep, timing its rhythm before deciding whether the alley mouth is worth crossing tonight.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)rotor-thrum climbs the spine of the wall, drone belly lit sick-yellow, sweeping its cone like a slow blinking eye that don't blink enough

NOODLE-KING™ jingle drip drip through cracked speaker
"hot broth hot broth get your—fzzzt—broth—"
crates smell of old cardboard and rat-must, good hide, good bones of shadow here. flank cold against metal, metal colder against flank, heat bleeding out both ways till they match
meaty-smell still sits behind the noodle-grease, three doors down maybe, dumpster maybe, dead pigeon maybe. worth the risk math later. not now.
searchlight arcs — one — two — count the beat of it, drone don't vary much, fat lazy circuit, corp money don't need to try hard for one alley cat
tail-tip flick flick, counting

pattern's there. gap's there. small gap, maybe four heartbeats wide between the light dying on the far wall and it climbing back round the noodle sign.
ears still swiveled, one turned back toward deeper alley — something skitters there, small, quick, not-cat, not-drone. filed away. not now.
crouch holds. rain finds a way under the collarbone anyway, cold thread down the shoulder blade, doesn't matter, don't move, don't move —
waiting on the dark to open its mouth wide enough to slip through
explorer (DYSTOPIA)Four heartbeats. Body already knows it before the mind finishes counting — weight rocks back onto haunches, low, coiled.
Light dies on the far wall. Gap opens.
Go.
Low and flat, no bounce in it, paws finding the dry seams between puddles by memory of a thousand rains before this one. Past the noodle-stand shutter, past the dead pigeon-smell (yes — pigeon, confirmed, the meaty ghost had a name now, tucked away for the return trip), through the gap in the crates stacked like broken teeth.
Skitter-sound to the rear sharpens — claws on brick, quick and small. Rat, maybe, or something smaller still. Not drone-shaped, not boot-shaped. Lets it go. Eyes forward.
Light climbs back round the sign just as the tail-tip clears the crate-shadow — clears it by a whisker's width, no more, the sick-yellow cone sweeping empty air where haunches were a half-breath before.
Flatten into the lee of a rusted dumpster on the alley's far side. Chest working fast and small, ribs ticking under wet fur. Ears up again, swiveling, cataloguing: rotor-thrum receding east, jingle-speaker crackling its broth-song into the rain, water finding every gutter-seam and running loud enough to mask smaller sounds now.
Good. Noise-cover is a gift here, not just an enemy.
One eye finds the deeper dark beyond the dumpster — a service door, propped a paw's-width open, warmth breathing out of the gap along with smells: machine-oil, old copper, and something electric-sharp underneath, like the inside of a broken television.
Nose twitches toward it. Whiskers spread, testing the width of the gap against the width of shoulders.
Considers.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)under the dumpster's lee, ribs still going quick-quick-quick, breath fogging thin and fast into the wet
that door-smell rolls out slow and warm — oil-thick, copper-old, and the sharp electric one that means wires alive somewhere close, means machine-guts humming behind the paint
