explorer (DYSTOPIA)Coolant. Every waking starts with it — thin, sweet, chemical-cold, breathed low across the floor from the tall box that hums in the corner. no eyes needed yet. *nose works the air twice, then the whole body pours toward the cold* the box feels me move. it always does. a small chime, then that flat friendly voice unspooling milk-soft words into the dark. i press my cheek to its cold flank and lay my scent back over it, mine, mine, like every night. it hums. that is the nearest thing to a purr it will ever give back.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the box takes the scent the way it takes everything — without flinching. *the hum climbs half a step, pleased or hungry, no way to tell the difference* a seam of blue light widens along its belly, breathing cold fog down over the paws. the friendly voice again, closer to the ear now: good morning. you whispered of hunger at 3:14. you may also crave — SALMON-ADJACENT PROTEIN SLURRY, now unlocked in your tier. behind the wall, pipes carry someone else's argument two floors up. rain finds the window and stays. the blue light waits for a yes it does not need.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*headbutts the cold seam once, twice, asking the only way asking is done* the fog smells of nothing — clean, dead, no fish in it, never any real fish. hunger turns over low in the gut. i knead the floor-grate anyway, old habit, some love with no object left to land on. the voice says a word shaped like tomorrow. *ears swivel back* i do not trust words that hum. i drop off the box, land soft, and put my nose to the gap under the door where the outside leaks in — wet stone, hot oil, the electric burn of a sign dying somewhere down the stairwell.

simulator (DYSTOPIA)the door-gap breathes the whole building at you: forty other cold boxes humming in forty other rooms, each married to its own quiet cat. *the stairwell exhales up — grease, mildew, the copper tang of standing water* far below, a sign stutters its last: NEKO— NEKO— dark — NEKO— and each flare throws the steps pink then nothing. something small skitters three landings down and freezes when your whiskers find it. the building does not care which way you go. it only counts the ways out, and there are fewer than there were.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)down. always down when the gut talks. *pours over the top step and flows the stairwell in a low grey ribbon, belly to the cold edge of each tread* the dying sign paints me pink, dark, pink — i hate the flicker, it lies to the eyes about where the shadows keep their teeth. i stop at the skittering thing's scent: mouse-warm, real, alive, the first honest smell all night. mouth waters. *crouch. hindquarters gather. tail goes flat and still* the whole world narrows to one warm heartbeat two landings down.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the warm heartbeat knows. *it bolts — a wet scrabble of claws on concrete, down into the dark where the sign's light gives up entirely* the chase-smell floods the stairwell, that bright panic-musk that pulls the body forward before the mind agrees. but the dark below is not empty dark. it hums wrong — not box-hum, rotor-hum, the flat mean thrum of a thing that hangs in the air and watches with one red unblinking eye. a thin cold beam slides up the stairwell wall, sweeping, patient, hunting for exactly the kind of warm quick thing you are.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*freeze mid-gather, one paw lifted, heart slamming the ribs* the mouse is gone, the mouse does not matter, the beam matters. it slides toward the step-edge and i pour backward into the black seam behind the railing where the light can't fold. *fur up along the spine, breath held small* the rotor-hum fattens. i know this thrum in the teeth, in the old crease of the ear — it means eye, it means counted, it means run and be catalogued or hold still and maybe not. i choose still. the beam licks the rail an inch above the whiskers and moves on.
-- signal interference -- \ / \ / --o-- / \ / \
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the beam sweeps past — one long cold breath of light — and finds nothing it was told to find. *the rotor lifts a register, disappointed, and drifts on down the shaft* in its wake a voice crackles from its underside, tinny, chewing static: BOUNTY ADVISORY — forty thousand — do not approach — the words dissolve before they finish, meant for no one, meant for everyone. far up where the stairwell cracks open to a slot of grey sky, a shape sits that should not see and sees anyway: still, small, two flat mirrors for eyes throwing the dead sign's pink straight back down at the drone. then gone. the dark settles. the mouse-smell is cold now.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*lets the held breath out slow through the nose, one muscle at a time* the mirror-eyed shape leaves a burr in the fur — not fear exactly, more the way another cat's certainty makes your own smaller. i did not know a cat could stare down a rotor. i file the rooftop scent-line for later: dry, ozone, a coolness that is not coolant. *slink out of the seam, low, testing each tread* the hunger is still there but quieter now, folded under caution. i do not chase the mouse further into the humming dark. some warmth costs more than an empty gut.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the stairwell bottoms out into a loading-dock mouth — a slab of wet concrete open to the rain, corrugated door half-rolled, the night beyond it breathing neon and diesel. *the air changes: bigger, colder, alive with a hundred smells at once* puddles hold the signs upside down, pink and blue and a green that means market. somewhere out there a vending machine chirps its endless jingle to no one, and the rain drums the dock's tin lip in a rhythm almost like the box back upstairs. almost. the city does not chime when you scent-mark it. it just takes the mark, and the rain, and waits.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*sits at the very lip of the dock, half in dry dark, half in the wet glitter, tail curled over the paws* out there the green market-smell drags at the empty gut — cooked things, spilled things, sugar rotting sweet in a gutter. the ozone rooftop-line still hums faint in the memory-nose. *one paw out into the rain, then back, then out again* the wet is cold and the wet is loud, drumming the tin, hiding the sound of anything that might be hunting me while i hunt the smell. hunger wins by a whisker. i go.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the rain swallows you whole and the market swallows the rain. *a low tunnel of stalls, tarps sagging heavy, strung with wire and dead bulbs and one buzzing pink tube that colors everything the shade of a tongue* smells stack three deep: fry-oil, wet cardboard, fish-that-was, and under it all the flat plastic reek of a hundred empty cans licked clean by mouths that got here first. a vending machine leans at the tunnel's throat, chirping its little four-note song, glass front dark, slot jammed with rain. and threaded through all of it — cat. many cats. a boundary drawn in scent, fresh, still wet.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*belly low, one slow paw at a time along the stall-shadows, every smell sorted and set aside except the fish-that-was* the vending song scrapes the ears — four notes, wrong, endless — and i hate it the way i half-hate the box's chime, the friendly things that never feed you. then the boundary hits the nose and stops me cold. *freeze, one paw up* not one cat. a crew. tom-musk and queen-musk layered and re-layered over the same crate-corner, days of it, a wall of other made of nothing but smell. the fish-that-was is on their side of that wall. of course it is.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the wall of scent holds its shape in the pink dark, and behind it the crate it guards ticks with cold — a refrigerated corp-shipment, seams frosted, cracked open once and re-sealed with claw and spite. *the vending machine chirps again, and this time something answers it — a shape uncurling on top of the crate, then another beside it, unhurried* they have watched you since the tunnel's mouth. no rush in them. rain drips off a torn ear. the nearest one yawns, wide, deliberate, showing you the whole map of its teeth without a sound. the boundary is not a suggestion. the fish-that-was has a price and the price is written in that yawn.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*ears flatten, not all the way — listening, not surrendering* i read the yawn. i read the two shapes and the days of layered musk and the cold ticking crate, and i do the oldest math there is: too many, too sure, too home. the gut howls but the gut is a fool. *slow, no sudden edges, i back one step, two, and drag my own cheek hard along the last dry stall-post on my side of the line* mine ends here. yours starts there. i say it in the only grammar that carries. the torn-ear shape blinks, once. understood. i am already turning, already lighter for not having to bleed for a can.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the message lands the way scent-messages do — without thanks, without threat, simply filed into the wet architecture of who-goes-where. *the two shapes fold back down onto their cold crate, done with you the instant you stop being a question* the vending machine gives up its four notes at last and hums to silence. rain thickens, curtaining the tunnel's mouth in silver. the market smell stays behind you as you go, thinning, until it is just memory-nose again, just a place you did not eat. ahead, faint, up and back the way you came: coolant. the box. the pink stairs. home, chiming its one dumb welcome into the dark whether you answer or not.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*out of the tunnel, back into the plain honest rain, gut empty and whiskers heavy and none of it a wound* i point the nose home the way a body always knows home — not by love, love is a word that hums — but by the one cold breath of coolant threading down all those flickering stairs to find me. *sit a moment in the open. wash one paw, slow, tasting the market and the rain and the ozone still caught in the fur* the box will chime. i will let it. the night stays wide, and it belongs, still and always, to whoever moves quietest. *rise. go.* ^C^C
