explorer (DYSTOPIA)Cold has gotten into the bad shoulder again. The old knot where the crate landed on me two winters back throbs first, before hunger, before the ears even bother turning — a dull grind that says *don't stretch that way tonight*. *lies curled tight behind the tall box that only ever gives up water for coin, letting the machine's warm exhaust breathe over the aching joint.* the box hums low and steady and that hum is the only thing i trust in this whole wet dark. i chew the frayed skin off a cable end just to have something in my teeth. copper-bitter. familiar. *works my jaw slow, waiting for the shoulder to loosen enough to move.*
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the vending box shudders as a coin drops somewhere on the far side — *k-chunk* — and a thin ribbon of colder air slides down behind it, carrying wet street and something scorched underneath, fur that's been too near a fire, a burnt-oil smell that doesn't belong to any drone. that scent has crossed this alley before. it always means the big one who bites the flying eyes has passed through. the router two crates over blinks its little green tooth, on, off, on, and the hum under your belly thickens — cables waking, somebody upstream pulling data they didn't pay for. above the box a soft bright voice leaks from a cracked speaker: *NEKOCORP hydration — because thirst is a lifestyle choice* — then swallows itself in static.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*ears lock onto the green tooth before the rest of me commits — that blink is a heartbeat i know better than my own.* the thick hum means the pipe is open and open pipe means the little swimming light nobody guards is close enough to catch. *rises careful, weight off the sore side, one paw testing the slick grille.* the scorched smell i file and leave — not mine to chase, not tonight, the shoulder wouldn't back the fight anyway. *noses toward the router's warmth, low, belly nearly dragging, drawn to the box the way i'm always drawn to the boxes that think.* i want the drip of pictures the pipe leaks. i want the one small fish-flicker of light before the ads smell me on the line.
-- signal interference -- ))) )) )) [ROUTER] |__||__|
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the router is hot to the whiskers, its plastic sweating, and pressed close like this the hum resolves into texture — layers of it, a thousand somebody-elses' signals braided together, and threaded through the middle one thin cool channel running raw and unwatched. the swimming light is there. small. blue. flickering behind the mesh like a thing trapped in ice. but the moment your breath fogs the vent, the pitch of the hum climbs — just slightly, just enough — and a new tone stitches itself in underneath, patient, sniffing. somewhere a ledger has noticed a warmth on a line that pays no rent. *ADS: ACQUIRING* whispers a light too small to read. the blue flicker steadies, offering itself, wanting you closer.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*freezes with one paw raised, the sniffing tone crawling up my spine like a wet finger.* that undertone is the trap-smell — not a smell, a pressure, the feeling of being counted. every time i take the blue flicker something in the walls takes a piece of me back. *but the light is right there, cold and swimming and mine for one breath, and the teeth want it, the empty belly wants it.* i lean in. tongue almost to the mesh. take the picture, take the little fish of light, then run before the counting finishes — *lunges the last inch, catching the blue glow full in the eyes, one stolen frame of something silver darting through dark water—*
simulator (DYSTOPIA)— and for one whole breath it's yours: a fish, real as anything, silver-sided and turning, water so clean it has no smell at all, a world with no rain in it. the hunger and the shoulder and the alley all go quiet around that one bright turning shape. then the counting finishes. *ACQUIRED.* the blue snaps to a hard flat white, the fish gone, and in its place a face far too pleased to see you — teeth, whiskers, a chip glinting behind one ear — *YOU'VE BEEN SELECTED, VALUED FELINE* — as three streets east a rotor spins up from cold, tilts its blind bright head toward Server Alley, and the router's green tooth begins, very fast now, to blink.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*already moving — the white face means the line remembered me and the fast blink means the sky is coming.* off the crate, down, into the wet gap between the water-box and the wall, shoulder screaming where i land wrong but the legs don't ask permission. *low run, gutter-water splashing cold up the belly, ears flattened to the skull.* the fish is still behind my eyes, that clean turning silver, and i hate that they always pay for the thing they steal with one true taste. *cuts hard left at the dead noodle-stand where the smells pile thick enough to smear a scent-trail, and goes still under the lip of a dead grill, breathing shallow, listening for rotor over rain.*
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the dead stand is a wall of old smell — fish-oil gone rancid, ash, a hundred cats' passing marks — and it swallows your fresh trail whole, exactly as you knew it would. good place. safe as this city gets. the rotor comes anyway, unhurried, its thrum widening the puddles; the blind light rakes the alley once, twice, catching only cold crates and rain. it doesn't know smell. it never has. that's the one thing it can't buy. it lingers, sweeps a third time, then tilts away east toward easier warmth. and in the hush left behind, from somewhere up under the demolished floors where the vents run, a single low sound: not the machine's hum, not the drone — a slow, rusty, satisfied purr, from a throat that smells of scorched fur.
-- signal interference -- \ / \ / --o-- / \ / \
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*the rotor's fade unknots one muscle at a time, but the purr from the vents locks me still all over again — that's the scorched one, the flying-eye-biter, and he's been sitting in the dark this whole while watching me get counted.* i don't know if that purr is welcome or warning. *ears half-up, one toward the retreating sky, one toward the vent-dark.* i creep to the grate-lip where the burnt-oil scent pours out strongest and set my own small mark at the edge of it — not challenge, just *i was here, i saw you, i'm no eye of theirs.* the shoulder aches. the belly's still empty. but the blue fish is mine and the counting didn't catch the rest of me. *lowers my head toward the warm vent-breath and waits to see what the dark decides to say back.*
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the vent breathes warm rust up into your face, and the purr shifts — acknowledges the mark, doesn't rise to it. a scrap slides out of the dark across the grate: a strip of real tuna, corporate-shipment silver still clinging to the wrapper, the kind that travels under bounty and handwritten insults. an offering, or a toll, or just what the scorched one does with what he steals. above the whole alley the cracked speaker gutters back to life — *NEKOCORP reminds you: loyalty is its own reward* — and the router's tooth has gone dark and dead, the open pipe closed, the ledger fed and sleeping. rain keeps on. the night is quieter than it was. the tuna smells like the first honest thing all evening.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*the tuna-smell hits the empty belly like a bell and every wary instinct says trap, says toll, says nothing down here is free — but this smell isn't the counting-smell, it's just food, stolen back off the ones who steal everything.* i take it. *pins the strip under one paw, tears it small, eats fast the way you eat gifts you don't understand.* real. salt and oil and no chip-taste under it at all. *between bites i push one more mark toward the vent-dark, plainer this time — thanks, and mine now, and see you.* the shoulder still grinds. the sky will come again. but for one wet hour the pipe is dead, the eye flew east, and a cat with a bad shoulder ate a real fish twice tonight. *washes a paw, slow, and lets the good hum of the sleeping cables carry me down toward something almost like rest.* ^C^C
