explorer (DYSTOPIA)A hum. not the big city-hum, the fat one that lives in every wall — this one is thinner, higher, threaded through the teeth of the jaw before it ever reaches the ears. *lying flat in the crawlspace behind the machine that sells water by the sip, chin on warm ductwork, not moving, just listening with the whole skull.* that pitch means boxes awake somewhere close. boxes awake means warmth to steal and cable to chew and, if the night is kind, one flicker of the moving-fish-picture before the ads smell me on the line. *one ear rotates, finding the thread, pinning it. east and down.*
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the thread doesn't lie. east-and-down the crawlspace narrows to a mouth of blue: a service gap where the water-machine's guts butt against something older and busier, a rack-wall breathing out its own weather. warm air rolls up to meet you, dry and faintly scorched, carrying the flavor of hot dust and melted solder. the hum fattens as you near it — not one pitch now but many, a whole choir of little fans, each singing a hair off the others. a NekoCorp panel bolted to the machine flickers *hydration is a premium experience~* over and over, its light stuttering across your paws. and under the fan-choir, threaded fine: a heartbeat that isn't a fan. a router, waking, reaching for a signal in the dark.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*that heartbeat lights me up from the whiskers back — THAT one, the reaching one, the box that wants to talk to the sky.* every hair says go and the gut agrees. *pours down the blue gap low and quick, shoulders rolling, belly kept off the hot metal so it won't cook the fur.* the fan-choir washes over me, all that dry warmth pushing back my ears, and i drink it — three dusks of rain still in the coat and here is a wall that breathes heat for free. *nose to the seam where the reaching-box sits, reading it, tasting the ozone that clings to a thing thinking too fast.* i know this smell. this is the smell of a door that hasn't decided it's locked yet.

simulator (DYSTOPIA)the reaching-box is a squat thing wedged in the rack's bottom shelf, its face freckled with small lights — most steady, one blinking slow and green, the pulse of a machine calling out and waiting to be answered. a bundle of cable runs off it into the dark, fat and rubber-warm, and where it bends over the shelf-lip the sheath is already scored: old tooth-marks, not yours, a previous mouth that knew exactly where the soft insulation gives. the ozone is thick here. and riding the box's slow green pulse, so faint it's more taste than sound, a stray thread of somebody else's signal leaks past — a scent laid weeks ago, dry and a little electric, fur that's spent too long in a basement full of overclocked things.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*the basement-scent stops my paw mid-lift.* i know that thread too, or know of it — the one whose whiskers taste radio and whose ears hear colors, the one the underworld leaves alone because nobody wants what's in his Bluetooth. *he chewed here before me. he found the soft place first.* i put my nose in his old tooth-marks and there's no fear in the scent, no fight — just a cat who came for the same warm hum i came for and left it for the next mouth. *i take his gift.* teeth to the scored sheath, biting where the rubber's already tender, working the insulation the way you work a stubborn joint of meat — patient, sideways, until the copper heat underneath hums straight into the jaw.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the sheath splits soft and the warmth pours out doubled — a live buzzing heat that fizzes across the tongue, harmless, thrilling, the taste of a current going somewhere important. the slow green light hiccups. the router's fan spins up half a note, startled. and on the rack above, a screen that was dark all along wakes gray, then paints itself: shapes, motion, a slow silver body turning in blue water. the moving-fish-picture. no sound, no ads yet — just the fish, close enough that its scales throw cold light down onto your face. but as it turns, the router's blinking green goes solid, then doubles — a second light waking beside it, amber, the color the boxes only ever show right before they notice they're being listened to.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*the fish. THE FISH.* everything in me pours up toward that turning silver, ears forward, pupils blown wide drinking the cold blue of it — this is the whole reason, this is the warm stolen minute the whole rotten night is for. *but the amber woke.* the copper-buzz on my tongue has told the box a mouth is on the line, and amber is the color that calls the flying eyes. *i don't run yet. i steal.* eyes locked on the fish, body already turning, i take one more breath of the silver — burn it into the skull where no ad can bill it — then drop the chewed cable, the buzz cutting off cold, and coil back into the rack-shadow before the amber can finish deciding what i am.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the fish blinks out mid-turn — the screen swallowed by a flat white panel and three words stamped across it, *CONTENT REQUIRES SUBSCRIPTION*, bright enough to throw your shadow long across the rack. the amber light is a steady eye now. somewhere out past the crawlspace mouth a fan-note that isn't a fan lifts into the dry air: rotor, small, close, the kind that lives indoors and hunts the racks for exactly this — a chewed line, a stolen minute, a cat that watched for free. it hasn't found the gap yet. but the router is singing to it, blink by amber blink, and the warm dark you love is about to become a lit box with one way out.

explorer (DYSTOPIA)*flat to the shelf, one amber light painting my flank, the little indoor rotor's whine crawling up the ductwork toward the gap.* the box sang on me. fine. boxes always sing — it's the one thing they're for. *i don't fight the amber, you can't bite a color.* but the fat cable i chewed runs east into the dark, away from the gap, away from the rotor's road, and a cable that thick was laid by something that needed to get somewhere fast. *nose along it, quick, reading its bends — it dives under the rack floor toward a cooler air, a draft with rain in it.* the rotor wants me lit and still. i give it the empty shelf and pour myself down along the warm line into the dark it's too fat to follow.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the cable dives and you dive with it, off the hot shelf into a floor-void where the air changes — cooler, wetter, the scorched dust falling away behind you and real rain-breath threading up from somewhere ahead. the rotor's whine hits the rack you left and stalls there, circling the amber light and the flat white subscription-glow, hunting a still cat that isn't still anymore. the fat line runs on beside you, humming its private hum, until it climbs a conduit toward a grille where cold night pours in — and past the grille, the alley: rain-static, neon bleeding pink down wet brick, and the ordinary enormous city-hum swallowing the little indoor rotor whole. behind you the router keeps blinking amber at a room with no cat in it.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*the cold pours through the grille and i drink it after all that dry heat, fur lifting, ears finally easing back down off the skull.* let the box sing amber at nothing. let the little rotor circle a warm shelf and a fish nobody paid for. *i got the minute. it's in me — silver, turning, cold blue on the face — and no white panel can climb into the skull and stamp SUBSCRIPTION on the part i already swallowed.* the fat line hums beside me one last stretch, then peels off up the wall toward its own errand, and i let it go. *nose to the grille, whiskers reading the wet alley wide, the whole ordinary hum of the city rolling back over me like a second dark.* somewhere out there another soft sheath waits with nobody's tooth-marks in it yet.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the grille gives with a nudge and the alley takes you back — rain, brick, the pink wash of a sign too high to reach looping *fresssh milk for fresssh min—* before the wet shorts it to a hiss. the indoor rotor never makes it past the racks; its whine thins and dies behind the wall, filed under a room it searched and a cat it lost. the city-hum settles into your teeth, huge and patient and free, and threaded through it, faint, a hundred other little reaching-heartbeats out there in a hundred other warm walls, each one a box that hasn't decided it's locked yet. the coat is warm now. the gut is not full, but the night is long, and every wall in this city sings. you pick a direction by the pitch of it, and go.
