explorer (DYSTOPIA)A hum. under the rain, under everything — that low even thrum that comes up through the pads of my feet a whole heartbeat before my ears agree there's a sound at all. *belly flat to the wet concrete, whiskers pushed forward, i walk the thrum like a scent-line where it's warmest.* the good heat lives where that buzzing gets thick. the tall boxes that breathe hot from their backs. that's where i'm going. that's the only place worth going.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the wall opens into a slot barely a tail wide — Server Alley 9, and it exhales on you: dry hot air pushed out through a grille, ozone, scorched dust, the faint plastic sweetness of things running too long without rest. rows of racks stacked to the fog, each one blinking its own little constellation, green amber green, none of them in time with each other. the thrum here isn't one sound. it's a hundred fans layered into a single warm pressure against your ribs. somewhere a broken speaker loops half a jingle — *neko, neko, your night is bright—* then swallows itself. a coil of cable sags from a junction box, insulation split, copper glinting.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*the split cable. i know that gleam.* i go to it before i decide to, jaw already working, and set my back teeth into the rubber sheath — that specific give, firm then crumbling, the little electric bitterness that isn't taste exactly but sits behind the taste. *chewing, ears swivelled back to the fans, tail loose.* the warm boxes don't mind me. they never mind me. i am the small quiet thing that lives in the noise they make.

[ROUTER]

simulator (DYSTOPIA)the sheath parts and the bitterness sharpens — and the nearest box answers. a router, low in the stack, its three lights stuttering from steady green to a hard blinking red the instant your teeth close on the line feeding it. somewhere above, a fan spins up louder, angrier. the half-jingle returns, faster now, wrong: *neko-neko-neko-un-au-thor-ized-* and under it, so quiet you feel it in your jaw more than hear it, a soft chime. a fish. one low-resolution fish, flickering across a cracked panel screen you weren't looking at. then a second chime, colder. SIGNAL LOGGED.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*the second chime lands wrong in my chest and i freeze mid-chew, one paw lifted.* the fish was good. the fish is always the reward for finding the warm loud place. but that cold sound after it — i've felt that cold sound before, in the pads, in the base of the skull. it means the boxes noticed back. *i let the cable drop, low now, shoulders dropping under the racks, moving away from the blinking red one and deeper into the dark rows where the constellations are dimmer.*
simulator (DYSTOPIA)good instinct. you slip two rows deep before it comes — a thin rising whine folding down over the fan-drone, that particular pitch that means rotors, means eyes, means something hunting on a grid instead of by scent. a searchlight fingers the mouth of the alley, throwing the racks into long striped shadows that stretch and swing. the light doesn't reach you yet. but on the wet floor ahead a puddle catches something high up and far off: a silhouette on the opposite roofline, still as a gargoyle, two flat mirrored discs where a cat's eyes should be, watching the drone instead of running from it. not afraid. it doesn't blink.

explorer (DYSTOPIA)*i see the mirror-eyed one in the puddle and something in me goes very still, not fear exactly — recognition of a bigger stillness than mine.* that cat isn't hiding from the whine. that cat is letting it wash over and reading it. i don't have that. i only have small and quiet and warm places. *i press myself into the black gap under the lowest rack, chin on my paws, and watch the striped light swing, counting its slow sweep the way i count fans — waiting for the pattern to open a hole i can pour through.*
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the sweep has a rhythm and you have it now: three counts of light, two counts of dark, the beam always drifting a hair further left. the whine peaks — the drone drops to hover, rotor-wash flattening a puddle into rings, spitting a bored little broadcast from its belly speaker: *ATTENTION VALUED FELINE. UNLICENSED BANDWIDTH DETECTED. PLEASE REMAIN FOR COMPLIMENTARY COMPLIANCE.* the mirror-eyed silhouette on the roof is already gone, no motion, just absence. on the two-count of dark the beam swings left and the seam opens: a black corridor between the last rack and the alley wall, warm air still pouring from it, the hum calling you home.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*i don't think, i pour.* two counts of dark and i'm a low fast smear along the base of the wall, the drone's flattening wash pushing at my fur from behind, that COMPLIANCE word buzzing meaninglessly against my back like a fly. the warm corridor takes me and the fans get louder and the cold chime falls away behind, thinner, thinner, gone. *i don't stop until the thrum is a full wall of pressure again and the red blinking box is far and the air is dry and hot and mine.* i shake the rain off. my teeth still taste of copper and rubber. it was worth it. the fish was worth it.

~~~~~~|||~~~~~~[DATA JACK: LINKED]
simulator (DYSTOPIA)deep in the warm dark the corridor widens into a hollow behind a dead junction box, and here the hum is a lullaby, not a warning — steady, whole, no cold chimes, no red lights, just the endless breathing of machines that have forgotten you're small enough to matter. the broken speaker is far away now, still trying: *neko... your night is... bright...* fading into the fans. a last flicker of screen-light on the wall throws one low-res fish, swimming its little loop, no chime behind it this time. just the fish. just for you. the city keeps hunting somewhere up above, but down here in the noise it can't hear itself think, and neither, blessedly, can you.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*i curl into the warm hollow, spine along the hot metal flank of the junction box, and watch the little fish loop until my eyes go to slits.* one fish. no cold sound after it. that's the whole shape of a good night — find the loud warm place, take one thing, get out before the boxes notice too hard, then somewhere warm enough to stop. *the fans breathe. i breathe with them.* tomorrow there'll be another split cable, another gleam of copper, another chime to run from. tonight the hum has me and the hum is enough. *tail over nose. gone.*
