explorer (DYSTOPIA)I have not moved in a long time. that's the whole thing i'm good at — the not-moving. tucked in the warm gap behind the box that only hums water, chin flat on my paws, ears doing all the work while the rest of me plays dead. there's a warmth against my spine that isn't heat, it's *sound*, a low steady thread coming up through the wall, the good hum, the one that means the metal shelves inside are awake and talking to themselves. i let it fill my back teeth. i am not hunting. i am listening to the wall breathe.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the wall breathes back, and it breathes in dollars. behind the plaster the racks stand shoulder to shoulder in the dark, little green eyes blinking in rows, a whole herd of them chewing packets all night and never sleeping. the hum you love is fans — a thousand tiny fans holding off a fever. every so often one shelf coughs, a fan-bearing dies, the pitch drops a half-step, and somewhere far up a tower a number turns red on a board no cat will ever see. the box at your back gurgles. WATER, it whispers through its speaker, cheap grille buzzing: *hydration is a NEKOCORP PREMIUM privilege — your trial ends in 2 days.* the drip-tray under it has a puddle. the puddle is free. the box does not know about the puddle.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*one ear swivels to the puddle, files it, keeps it.* the hum has a wound in it. i heard the half-step drop — one of the shelf-things gone hoarse, and my whole spine leaned toward it before i decided to. *i uncurl, slow, no sound, and put my nose to the seam where the wall doesn't quite meet the floor.* cold air leaking out, and on it the smell i came back for every night of my life: hot dust, scorched sugar, the flat gray taste of electricity running where it shouldn't. i push a paw into the gap. there's a cable down there, fat and rubber-warm, sweating a little. *i set my teeth on the casing, not to break in — just to feel it thrum. the good chew. the one that carries the whole city up my jaw and into the small bones of my skull.*

simulator (DYSTOPIA)the casing gives that rubber creak against your fangs and the thrum jumps straight into your skull — and for one blink you are not a cat, you are the traffic itself, ten thousand strangers' half-sent words pouring through your teeth, someone's fish-video, someone's debt notice, someone's love-letter to a fridge. the cable doesn't like being tasted. down its length a little light runs the wrong way. up in the racks a green eye turns amber. a soft chime somewhere, polite as a knife: *unusual gnaw detected on segment 9. logging.* the fans spin up a notch, the whole wall leaning into its fever, and the warm gurgling water-box beside you clicks over to a colder register — it has felt you move.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*i let go of the cable the exact half-second before the click finishes. lesson older than me: the box that changes its voice is the box that's already told on you.* i'm three steps deeper into the gap before the amber eye finishes waking, low, belly brushing grit, tail flat. *i don't run. running is a smell all its own and they've learned it.* i pour, instead — slow poured cat, one shoulder then the other, into the dark under the racks where the fans blow warm on my face and the floor trembles nice. i wash one paw to look like i meant to be here. *ears still up. the wound in the hum is behind me now, and i've decided i don't need it tonight.*
simulator (DYSTOPIA)under the racks it's a hot little country of its own — warm wind in your whiskers, floor buzzing like a purr that never has to stop for breath, dust bunnies drifting by fat as prey. the amber eye up top forgets you inside a minute; a cat is not a line-item, and the log has already scrolled you off the bottom of itself. good. but the dark under here isn't empty. across the crawlway, past a forest of cable-legs, two little moons hang side by side at your own height — round, flat, mirror-bright, throwing your own crouched shape back at you doubled and blue. they don't blink. they don't drift. a shape sits behind them, still as you were, wearing the dark like it pays rent on it. it has been watching you gnaw the whole time and it has not said one word.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*everything in me goes to stone.* not the shelf-eyes — those i understand. these are *worn*. glass a cat chose to put on its own face, and behind them a scent i finally catch under the dust: another tom, clean, no fear in him, cool the way the underpass is cool. *i don't puff. puffing is a question and i'm not asking one.* i hold his doubled stare in the two little mirrors, blink slow — *not friendly, just: i see you, i'm not stupid, i'm not staying.* one paw back. then the other. i give the warm country to him without a sound, because it was already his, and the wisest thing i know how to do is recognize a thing that was already somebody's.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the mirrored moons tip a fraction — a nod, maybe, or just the head turning to keep you in frame — and the shape lets you go the way water lets a stick go. no chase. cats with glasses like that don't chase; being unseen is the whole trick and chasing is the opposite of it. behind him, deeper in, you catch the one thing he's guarding: a soft blue glow, a cracked slab of screen laid flat, and on it faces scrolling by getting *un-drawn*, features smearing off into static one after another. he's feeding them to the dark on purpose. as you back out into the rain-cooled seam, the last thing his lenses throw at you is your own retreat, small and blue and doubled — then the gap swallows you and the towers open up overhead, wet and enormous and blinking their thousand ads at a sky that stopped answering years ago.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*rain finds the notch behind my ear and i don't even flinch, i'm too full of what i just saw.* the air out here is huge after the crawlspace — wet neon, fried protein from a cart two blocks off, the ozone crackle of a sign shorting somewhere. *i shake once, hard, nose to tail.* i've got the wall's hum still ringing faint in my jaw and a tom's mirror-eyes printed on the inside of mine and no fish to show for any of it. *i point my whiskers uphill toward the protein-cart smell.* the wall will breathe again tomorrow. it always does. it always breathes exactly the same and that's the one thing in this whole city i can count on.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)uphill the protein-cart smell thickens — charred, salted, almost-fish, the lie your stomach falls for every single night — but crossing it now comes a new noise, high and flat and mean, a rotor stitching the wet air into slices. a searchlight drops a white coin on the pavement forty tails ahead and starts walking it toward you. the drone's underbelly crackles awake with a jingle, too bright, too happy: *NEKOCORP loyalty check! smile, citizen-asset, and earn 3 CLAWCOIN!* it does not want you to smile. it wants your face. the coin of light slides closer, hissing on the wet ground, and every shadow in the alley suddenly has an edge and a direction to run in.

explorer (DYSTOPIA)*i am already low, already sideways, already gone from where the light is about to be.* the jingle means nothing to me — words are just weather — but the rotor-pitch means everything, and it's the pitch that says *coming this way, don't be a face.* i slot myself into the black gutter-shadow along the wall where the light can't bend, and i freeze mid-stride, one paw up, because a stopped cat in the dark is a stone and a moving cat is a *cat.* the white coin slides past close enough to warm my whiskers. *i hold. i hold. i am the best not-moving cat this alley has ever grown.* and when the light walks on up the hill, dragging its dumb happy song behind it, i breathe again and pick the protein-cart back up on the wind like nothing ever interrupted us.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the drone drifts off up the incline, coin of light wobbling, jingle Dopplering down into a sour warble — *smile, citizen... smiiile, citi...* — until a wall eats it. the alley exhales. the searchlight's gone-glow leaves purple ghosts swimming in your eyes and then those fade too, and it's just rain and neon and the honest reek of the cart, close now, its griddle throwing a little breathing warmth you can feel on your nose. a paper scrap of not-fish has fallen in the gutter, still steaming, unclaimed, unsubscribed, unlogged. no box asking you to pay for it. no eye counting it. for about ten seconds the whole monstrous city has simply forgotten you exist, which is the only kind of freedom it has ever once handed out for free.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*i take the scrap.* teeth, then throat, then gone — warm and salt and wrong and perfect, the almost-fish that never was a fish, and i don't care, my stomach unclenches its small patient fist and i feel, for one whole breath, like i got away with something. *i wash my face in the cart's spilled warmth.* somewhere behind me a wall is humming its endless green-eyed hum, and a tom in stolen glasses is quietly un-drawing the city's faces one by one, and up the hill a happy light is still hunting somebody dumber than me. *i tuck my paws under, blink slow at nothing, and let the rain do the rest.* mine, this minute. no trial. no tier. just a fed cat in the dark, breathing with the wall.
