explorer (DYSTOPIA)Ozone. that's the first thing — sharp and metal-sweet, the taste a machine gives off when it's been awake too long. it's coming up through the floor before anything else does, before the cold, before the hum. *i keep my belly low to the concrete and let it climb into my nose.* somewhere under me a stack of boxes is breathing warm. i know that smell better than i know hunger. i follow it.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the warm gets warmer. one paw, then the next, and the concrete gives way to a grille that thrums — a low steady tone that lives in your whiskers, not your ears. below: racks. blinking green, blinking amber, a whole wall of little eyes that never sleep. dust here tastes of hot copper and old plastic. a fan pushes exhaust up through the grille in slow breaths, ruffling the fur along your spine. to the left a bundle of cables sags from a busted conduit, insulation split, the good stuff showing through. NEKOCORP stencil on the conduit, half peeled. the racks hum a chord you could almost fall asleep inside.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*the chord pulls at something behind my teeth.* i put my mouth on the split cable before i decide to — jaw working, the rubber giving that satisfying give, copper cold and bright against my tongue. this is mine. i've chewed this exact stripe of it before, i think, or one just like it in some other basement that hummed the same. *i knead the warm grille with my front paws while i gnaw, tail flicking to the beat of the fans.*

simulator (DYSTOPIA)the cable bites back — not pain, a buzz, a numb tingle that jumps your jaw and makes your ears ring green for half a breath. somewhere in the rack a light that was amber goes red. then another. a small flat voice leaks out of a speaker no bigger than a bottlecap, threaded into the din: "unmetered access detected. unmetered access detected. your loyalty tier is: none." the fans keep breathing. the warm keeps being warm. but the red is spreading, rack to rack, like something down there just opened an eye and is deciding whether you're worth the paperwork.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*i don't like the flat voice. i like the fish video the cable sometimes gives me if i chew in the right place, but the flat voice means the other thing is coming.* i let the copper drop from my mouth. ears swivel, low. i don't run yet — running is loud, running is a scent-trail. i flatten instead, chin to grille, and i listen past the fans for the sound i'm actually afraid of. the one with rotors.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)there. under the fan-breath, over the hum: a thin whine winding up, the pitch of a small angry insect the size of your head. it's not in the basement yet. it's in the shaft — the vertical one, the throat of the building — and it's coming down. the whine gets teeth. a thread of white light spills across the far wall, sweeps, steadies. wet grit at the shaft's mouth lights up. the racks' red glow and the drone's white cut two shadows of you across the floor, both of them stretched thin toward the exit you already knew about but hadn't named.

explorer (DYSTOPIA)*now.* i pour off the grille sideways — not toward the light, never toward the light, toward the sag of cable and the black gap behind the conduit where the warm exhales out of a seam too small for anything with rotors. *shoulders first, the rest of me folding after, whiskers reading the width before my body commits.* the split cable brushes my flank on the way past and i taste copper again in memory, bright, gone. behind me the whine fills the whole room. ahead of me: narrow, and dark, and mine.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the seam swallows you and the whine can't follow — it snags at the mouth, furious, throwing its white light in after you where it flattens and dies against a bend. the passage here is body-warm and blind. your sides brush both walls. the hum is behind you now, muffled to a heartbeat. ahead the air changes: cooler, wetter, carrying rain and rust and — faint, curling in from some vent above — a scent that isn't yours and isn't the drone's. burnt fur. scorched, old, a cat that's been near fire and kept walking. it threads the dark like a signature. whoever left it went this way, unhurried, a long time before you.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*i stop with one paw lifted.* the burnt-fur smell puts a stillness in me. i know it the way i know the chord in the racks — not a name, a weight. big. unafraid of the drones. the kind of cat that bites the things that bite us. *i don't cross the scent-line. i lower my paw on my side of it and sit, breathing it in, letting my own heartbeat come back down out of my throat.* the rain-smell says there's an out ahead. the burnt-fur says i'm not the only one who found it.

simulator (DYSTOPIA)the vent above ticks — cooling metal, or something shifting on the far side of it. the burnt-fur scent doesn't come closer and doesn't leave. from the drain-cold ahead, a slow drip keeps a clock. and threaded under all of it, so quiet you feel it in your paw-pads before you hear it, the building's hum finds you even here — the racks, three walls away, still singing their green-amber chord, still holding a fish video you never got to watch, still open on a tier that says: none. the passage waits. the rain waits. the night, as ever, belongs to whoever moves quietest.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*i choose the rain.* i leave the burnt-fur its road and take the drip-clock one, low and soft, each paw set down like i'm apologizing to the floor for touching it. the copper-taste fades off my tongue. the hum lets go of my whiskers one thread at a time. i'll be back for the warm grille — i'm always back — but not tonight, not with the flat voice awake and something bigger already walking these seams. *i slip toward the rain-smell and let the dark close up behind me like it was never open.*
