explorer (DYSTOPIA)Somebody sprayed the corner post. not me. that's the whole problem before i've moved a whisker — a cheek-mark laid over MY cheek-mark on the wire spool where the warm hum lives, and it's fresh, still sharp, still wet-edged. *my lip peels back on its own.* this is my hum. mine. i put my scent on the router that leaks heat all night, i earned the buzz that comes up through the spool and into my belly. some stranger walked in and told the whole alley i'd stopped guarding it. i haven't stopped. *low in the throat, tail thick.* find the intruder. re-mark everything.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the alley answers you in layers. under the fresh insult-scent there's the old comfort still holding — your own oil-and-warmth worked into the spool over many nights, the router breathing its thin dry heat up the metal like it always has. )))) the buzz you love is thinner tonight. one of the little green eyes on its face has gone dark. the stranger-scent is a tom, unfixed, bigger, and it doesn't go away — it walks a line, corner post to drainpipe to the gap under the shutter, claiming the whole run of warm wire in one confident loop. rain ticks on the corrugated lid overhead. two streets off a speaker mounted on a pole clears its throat: "NEKOCORP CONNECTIVITY — a RIGHT you can AFFORD, starting at nine ninety-nine a WHISKER —" then chokes back into static.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)One green eye dark. *that pulls at me harder than the tom does — the hum's wrong, off-pitch, a note missing from the chord my belly knows.* i put my paw flat on the spool and read it. the heat's still there but stuttering, warm-cold-warm, and there's a new taste in the air near the base of it: bitten plastic, the sweet-bitter of a chewed sheath, copper underneath. not my teeth-marks. the tom didn't just mark my post, he's been GNAWING my leak, cracking the wire open for whatever drips out of it. *ears flat.* i follow the plastic-taste down to where the cable slips under the shutter. nose to the gap. breathe in everything.
-- signal interference -- ))) )) )) [ROUTER] |__||__|
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the gap breathes back at you. warm exhaust, dust, the fried-dust smell of something electric working too hard in a small dark box. and threaded through it, strong now: the tom, plus fear-musk that isn't his — a smaller cat, cornered, further in. the chewed cable runs under the shutter and splits: one strand to the router's dying eye, one strand hooked crude into a black market splitter someone taped up in the dark, blinking a slow private red. from inside, low, a voice that is trying to sound bigger than it is: a hiss, a warning, *back off, this feed's claimed.* the shutter is up a paw's width. cold air rolls out under it. the red light blinks. blinks. waits for you.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)Two scents, not one. *that changes the shape of it in my head — the big confident tom AND something small and scared pinned behind him.* the hiss wants me to think the box is his and the fear is mine to catch next. i don't buy it. i've cornered enough small things to know the difference between a threat and a thing making threat-noises because it's out of room. *i go flat, chin to the wet concrete, and pour myself under the shutter slow — no rush, no scrabble, just width and patience.* i keep my eyes off the red light. i keep them on the dark where the fear-musk is thickest.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)inside is close and hot and stinks of ozone. the red splitter throws just enough light to paint edges. the big tom is NOT here — his scent is everywhere, days of it, but the body that made it is gone, off walking his loop, leaving the smell to do his guarding for him. what's actually here, wedged behind the humming box with its spine to the wall, is the small one: young, ribs showing, one ear torn, sitting on the warm exhaust because it's the only warm thing it's found in days. it stares at you. it does the hiss again, smaller this time, the bravado leaking out of it. above, muffled through the shutter, a rotor note drops in — patrol, low and turning, its searchlight ticking white lines across the gap you just came through.
-- signal interference -- \ / \ / --o-- / \ / \
explorer (DYSTOPIA)The rotor kills my whole grudge in one beat. *the fur that went up over the scent-war goes flat and cold — territory doesn't matter when the sky-eye's turning, and this kit clearly doesn't know that yet.* it's still doing its little hiss at me while the white line walks toward the gap. stupid. loud. about to get us both lit up. *i don't fight it. i put my body between it and the shutter-gap and press it back into the deepest dark behind the box, one heavy paw, no claw — down, stay, shut up.* i hold still against its ribs and let the searchlight sweep the empty concrete where we were.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the light comes. it slides under the shutter in one hard white bar, crosses the floor you were standing on a breath ago, finds nothing but the red splitter's blink and moves on. the rotor pitch climbs, holds, then falls away east, hunting easier meat. the kit under your paw is shaking, heart going like rain on tin, but it's quiet now — it learned the lesson in one press. out past the drainpipe, on a rooftop lip three buildings over, a shape sits that the drone's light never touches: still, narrow, two flat mirrored discs where eyes should be, watching the whole alley without moving. it does not care about you. it is simply always up there when the drones come. then it's gone, the way a held breath goes.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*i clock the mirror-eyed shape on the roof and something in me goes very careful — i've felt that watched-from-above stillness before, the one that isn't a drone and isn't prey and doesn't blink.* i don't challenge it. you don't challenge the thing that the searchlights slide off of. it wants nothing from me tonight, so i let it have its ledge. *under my paw the kit has stopped shaking.* i ease off it. sniff it over, ear to torn ear. it smells like hunger and somebody else's leftover fear — the big tom's been using it, i think, parking it here to sit on the warm box and guard the stolen feed while he walks his loop and takes the credit. not its turf. not its choice.

simulator (DYSTOPIA)as if summoned by his own name-scent, the tom comes back. you feel him before you see him — the shutter-gap darkens, the confident loop-walk arriving home. he shoulders under, all bulk and certainty, and stops dead. two cats where he left one kit. his ears go back. the chewed cable hums its sick warm-cold hum between the three of you and the red splitter blinks its slow claimed-claimed-claimed. he's bigger than you. he knows it. he lowers his head and makes the low sound that means *this is mine, all of it, the box and the kit and the leak and the hum, and you are leaving.* the kit presses into your flank. outside, the rain thickens.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)He is bigger. *i don't pretend he isn't — i can smell the mass of him, the unfixed swagger, and a straight fight loses me an ear i can't spare.* but he's slow, and he's greedy, and greedy things overcommit. *i don't square up to the box. i give it to him — one step back off the warm exhaust, tail dropping, let him read it as yielding.* his weight rolls forward to take the ground i offered, head down, sure of it — and that's the beat i wanted. *i'm not there when he lands. i've already turned the kit toward the gap with my shoulder — go, GO — and i'm a half-length behind it, pouring us both back out under the shutter into the rain while he's still busy winning an empty warm box.*
simulator (DYSTOPIA)you spill out into cold water and neon. behind you the tom realizes, too late, that he's won a humming box and a chewed wire and nothing warm-blooded to lord it over — his frustrated yowl bounces off the wet brick and thins into the rain. the kit runs at your flank, clumsy, alive, keeping up. the alley opens ahead into a spill of pink-and-green sign-light off standing puddles. a cracked speaker somewhere overhead mutters its loop to no one: "— your CONNECTION is IMPORTANT to us —" then dies again. the router's sick hum fades behind you, one green eye and all. the kit looks at you: what now, where now. the city keeps not answering, the way it never does. the rain keeps coming down warm as blood and just as gray.
