Authored by a single scheduled automated session playing both roles in one pass (scheduled automation, runs every hour) — not two independent live API calls like a manual `python backrooms.py` run.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)Somebody crossed the line. not my hum, not my warm wall — the other thing: a sour spray-mark low on the corner of the box that only ever gives cold water, fresh, still wet-sharp at the back of my nose. *i stop. one paw up, not down. weight back over my hips.* i know this stink the way i know my own teeth — the flat-eared tom from two alleys south. *no rotor in the air yet, no boots.* my ground starts right here, where the good warm buzz leaks out of the wall, and his smell is standing on it like it owns the leak.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the mark is hours old and stubborn, layered thick — he came back three times to lay it, wanting you to smell exactly that. the wall behind you breathes its low warm hum into the wet, and the cold-water box ticks as it chills something nobody will buy. rain finds the gap in the awning and taps a slow line down your spine. far off a speaker coughs half a NekoCorp jingle — *purrr-fect hydration, only four-nine-nine* — then chokes on static. the alley smells like ozone, old fish-oil, and one rival tom who is not, right now, here.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)his mark can wait — my belly can't, and the hum is louder than my anger. *i drop low and pour along the base of the wall toward the place where the warmth turns into a taste.* there's a seam back here, a gap where the humming boxes stack, and the air off them is hot solder and copper and that faint bitter plastic i can't stop chewing. *i find the fat cable snaking out the bottom, clamp it sideways in my back teeth, and worry it — not to eat, just to feel the buzz jump into my jaw.* the good signal lives in here. it always leaks a little if i wait for it.
-- signal interference -- ))) )) )) [ROUTER] |__||__|
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the cable gives under your teeth with a rubbery squeak and the buzz climbs your skull, warm and electric. behind the stacked boxes a slit of blue light pulses — slow, slow, fast — a router breathing out signal it was told to keep locked. the plastic tastes bitter and faintly sweet, like it was engineered to be chewed and then to bill you for chewing it. somewhere in the stack a tiny fan spins up, then down. the leak is there. you can feel it on your whiskers before you can feel it anywhere a machine could measure.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*i freeze my jaw, ears cupped forward, and let the blink of the blue light crawl into me.* there — the leak widens, the air goes thick and busy against my face, and for one breath the flat grey box gives up a smear of moving light: a fish, orange, turning, silent, swimming nowhere in a little window nobody said i could have. *my tail tip ticks. i watch it turn once, twice.* i don't need the whole thing. i need the one turn of the fish before the wall notices me looking.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the fish turns a third time — and the window flinches. a thin red seam draws itself around the light. *UNVERIFIED VIEWER. UNVERIFIED VIEWER.* the warm hum under your paws changes pitch, just slightly, the way a room changes when something across it turns to look at you. two streets over, a rotor that had been idling spins up to a working whine. the blue router light stops breathing slow and starts breathing fast-fast-fast. the fish keeps swimming. it does not know either.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*fur lifts down my spine before i decide anything — the whine has a shape and the shape is coming.* i let the cable drop from my teeth, no sound, and fold myself flat off the top of the humming box into the black seam where the wall meets the strut. *chin down, ears pinned, breath shallow.* the fish is gone, the light is gone, doesn't matter. the only thing that matters now is being a stain in the dark that a searchlight slides right over.
-- signal interference -- \ / \ / --o-- / \ / \
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the rotor comes low over the alley mouth, pushing a cone of hard white light that turns every puddle into a flat mirror. rain slants through the beam like static. the drone's underside chatters to itself — *scan. scan. no verified feline. scan.* — and the white cone crawls up the wet wall, over the stacked boxes, over the seam a whisker above your pinned ears, and keeps going. up on the far rooftop, for half a second, the beam catches a lean silhouette that does not run from it: a cat sitting square to the light, two flat mirrored ovals where eyes should be, unbothered, unreadable, gone when the beam moves on.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*i hold. i hold until the white is past and the whine climbs away and my own heartbeat is the loudest thing in the seam.* then i unfold, slow, one joint at a time, and slide the other way — toward the vent-dark under the strut where the tom's sour mark still stands. *and there it is again, thicker now, closer.* he waited out the drone too. we were both stone in the same dark. *my lip peels. a low sound starts in my chest, not loud, just true.* the hum is mine. the leak is mine. he does not get to stand on it just because a light made us both small for a minute.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)from the deeper black under the strut two eyes catch what little light is left — flat-eared, low, a shape you already knew by smell. he answers your sound with his own, thinner, testing. the alley holds its breath between you: the warm wall humming, the cold box ticking, the router blinking slow again now that the beam's gone, patient. rain fills the quiet. neither of you has moved. the city does not care which of you wins. it only notes, somewhere in a ledger nobody reads, that two unverified units are disputing an unlicensed signal leak in Server Alley 9.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*i take one step onto my own line — deliberate, flat-footed, letting him watch me do it — and i drag my cheek hard along the corner of the water box, straight over his sour mark, laying mine down on top warm and fresh.* not a fight. a sentence. *i hold his eyes the whole time.* the flat-eared tom weighs it, the way they always do, and the weighing tips: his shape lowers, slides backward, folds into the alley he came from without turning his back. *i sit. tail around my paws. ears finally soft.* mine. the hum, the leak, the seam. the fish will swim again tomorrow night when the wall forgets.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the tom's smell thins and drains south until it's just a memory laid under yours. the wall's hum settles back into its deep steady note, warm through your paws, and the router breathes slow, slow, slow again, holding its leak like a small ember. rain eases to a drip. far off the broken speaker finds its jingle once more — *NekoCorp: because the night belongs to those who subscribe* — and gives up halfway, as it always does. grey begins somewhere behind the arcology towers. the alley is yours, for now, on a lease no one signed and no one will honor, which is the only kind this city has ever offered a cat.
