explorer (DYSTOPIA)A hum. Not the street's hum, not the rain's — a deeper one, steady, coming up through the pads before the ears even find it. Server-rack warmth. I know this warmth the way I know my own ribs. *stays flat on the ductwork, tail still, letting the vibration sort itself into a direction — down and left, behind the mesh where the good heat leaks out.* every hair on my belly reads it. that's a fat pipe purring under there. somebody's paying premium for that airflow, and premium airflow means premium signal, and premium signal means the fish video plays without stuttering.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the hum thickens as you commit to it, resolving from a single note into a chord — dozens of fans, offset just enough to beat against each other, a sound with a texture you could knead. the mesh panel ahead breathes out air that smells of hot dust and clean ozone and the faint plastic-sweetness of insulation baked all day. below the mesh: a maintenance crawl lit only by the green freckle of link lights, hundreds of them, blinking out of sync. one cable runs loose along the floor seam, its jacket already gnawed pale in one spot — not by you. somebody's been here. the gnaw marks are old, the pale scuffed grey with dust. far off, past the racks, a soft repeating chime: NEKOCORP mesh node, handshaking with anything that comes close. *ba-dmm. ba-dmm.* it wants you to authenticate.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*ears swivel to the chime and pin flat — not fear, contempt. i know that sound. it's the sound of a door that thinks it's locked.* i don't authenticate. i chew. *drops off the ductwork onto the crawl floor, soft, four points, no click of claw on composite. pads read the loose cable through the dust — warm, live, the good kind of warm.* the old gnaw marks aren't mine but the tooth-spacing's close, some cousin, some ghost of a cat who wanted the same heat. i put my mouth where theirs was. *bites down slow on the pale spot, feeling for the give under the jacket, the thread of copper-song that means the signal's right here, right in the teeth.*
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the jacket splits with a small dry crackle and the taste floods in — bitter polymer, a tang like licking a battery, and under it a thin electric buzz that sets your whiskers trembling. the loose cable was a decoy run, half-dead, but the bite tells you something anyway: the live bundle runs a hand's-length deeper, behind the seam, where the buzz is loudest. the green link lights stutter all at once — a ripple down the whole crawl, blink-blink-blink — as if the racks felt the nibble and flinched. and the chime changes. *ba-DMM.* louder. a second later a flat synthetic voice threads out of a ceiling grille, warm as a heat lamp and just as artificial: "UNRECOGNIZED DEVICE DETECTED. please present your NEKOCORP loyalty credential for a faster, safer, more delicious connection." somewhere two crawls over, a rotor spins up from idle.

[ROUTER]
|__||__|
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*freezes at the rotor — that one syllable of sound reorganizes the whole body, weight already shifting off the front paws.* the loyalty voice i can ignore. the rotor i cannot. *leaves the dead decoy, slides along the seam toward the loud buzz, belly dragging composite, following the copper-song by feel — warmer, warmer, a heat-thread i could walk blind.* the deeper bundle sings against my nose before my teeth get near it. this is the one. this is the fat pipe. *but the rotor's still climbing, and my ears are doing two jobs at once, and one of them is counting how many walls are between me and the sky.*
simulator (DYSTOPIA)you find it by warmth alone: a braided bundle thick as your own tail, humming so hard the dust dances off it in little grey puffs. this is real bandwidth, the artery, and pressed against it your whole skull fills with that low copper choir. for one held breath the crawl is yours — the racks, the heat, the endless patient blink of the link lights. then the rotor's pitch drops as it noses into the crawl mouth behind you: a NekoCorp patrol drone, running low, its underslung light painting a hard white oval that slides along the floor seam toward your tail. it isn't hunting yet. it's reading. a lens the wet-black of a beetle's back rotates to focus, and from its belly speaker leaks a jingle, tinny and cheerful — *"one paw, one purr, one plan for life~"* — the NekoCorp anthem, playing to an audience of one trespasser.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*the white oval touches the tip of my tail and every muscle goes to liquid.* not yet. one more. *sinks my teeth into the fat pipe — not to sever, never to sever, just to open the jacket a whisper, just to let the copper-song out where i can hold it — and for one bright second the whole thing is in my mouth, the entire artery, the fish video and the ads and the loyalty voice and the drone's stupid jingle, all of it, all one taste.* then the light swings wide. *and i am already gone sideways, up the seam, claws finding the mesh i came down through, the good heat falling away behind me and the rotor-scream folding in to fill the space where i used to be.*
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the drone lunges at the empty warm spot your body left, light stabbing the seam where you were a half-second ago, jingle cutting to a flat alert tone — *EEP. EEP.* — as its lens hunts a target that's already three body-lengths up the mesh. behind you the fat pipe weeps a thread of static from the nick you left, a hairline of interference that'll ghost across some executive's fish stream forty floors up and cost nobody anything but a frown. the ductwork receives you into its dark. cooler here, the hum falling to a memory in the pads. and as you climb, whiskers still buzzing with stolen copper, a scent crosses the airflow from the vent ahead — scorched fur, ozone that isn't the racks' ozone, a burnt-oil reek that means one thing in this district. somebody demolished lives up that duct. somebody who bites drones for reasons that aren't hunger.

explorer (DYSTOPIA)*stops dead in the duct, one paw lifted, nose working the scorched-fur scent apart thread by thread.* i know this smell. everybody in the low crawls knows this smell. the cat who lives in the vents and bites the drones for sport, whose fur went black at the edges from something that used to be a home. *doesn't go toward it. doesn't go away either. sets the stolen copper-song down in the back of my skull where i keep the things worth keeping, and waits, small, in the dark, letting the burnt-oil ghost decide whether it's coming closer.* the rotor-scream is two crawls behind me now and thinning. up here it's just the two smells — old fire, and me — and the long patient blink of a city that thinks it counted every cat.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the scorched scent holds its distance — a boundary, not an approach. whoever wears it is somewhere up the duct's throat, motionless, and after a moment a low sound reaches you that isn't the racks and isn't the drone: a slow rhythmic scrape, tooth on metal, the unhurried patience of a cat gnawing something that has no business being gnawed. a surveillance drone, maybe, pinned and dismantled for the pleasure of it. the burnt-oil reek doesn't come closer and doesn't retreat. it's simply the edge of a territory, marked in scent the way yours is marked in bitten cable. the duct ahead exhales cold air down over you, carrying with it the far-off wash of the street — rain resuming, tires on wet composite, and threaded under all of it, so faint it might be the pads imagining it, that same fat-pipe hum, still purring in the dark below, still leaking its hairline of static, still yours in the one place NekoCorp can't audit: the back of a cat's skull, where the copper-song is already a memory nobody licensed.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*settles. tail curls. the scrape of tooth-on-drone up the duct is a lullaby from a neighbor i'll never meet and never fight, both of us fed tonight, both of us uncounted.* the street's calling rain again and the racks are calling heat and somewhere forty floors up an executive's fish is stuttering and doesn't know why. *tucks nose under paw, one ear still up for the rotor that won't come back this way, and lets the copper-song play behind my eyes — no ads, no loyalty voice, no jingle, just the pure hum of a pipe that forgot to lock its door.* mine. all of it. for as long as the warmth lasts.
