explorer (DYSTOPIA)Not moving. that first. before the alley, before the smell of it, the fact that i am not moving and don't want to yet. *low on the elevated walkway rail, chin flat to cold wet metal, tail poured down the far side where nothing can grab it.* the whole city breathes under me and i am only breathing back. warm updraft off the vent grille to my left keeps one ear soft. the other ear stays out here in the rain, turning, counting the things that move so i don't have to be one of them yet.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the rail hums a little under your chin — not a threat-hum, a far one, monorail three streets over pulling its weight through the wet. below you the alley is a long cold trench of standing water throwing back pink and green in wobbles. steam rope from the vent smells of scorched noodle-fat and old grease, and under it, thinner, the sour-copper of something a rat left. far down the trench a puddle keeps flinching — flinch, still, flinch — in time with a light you can't see the source of. nothing has noticed you. the updraft says stay. the rain on your out-ear says the night is only getting started.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*i let the copper-smell decide it.* rat-leaving means rat-route, and rat-route means a way down the wall the humans forgot. i pour off the rail slow, no drop, just spill onto the ledge below, then the pipe, then the crate. *pads land soft-soft-soft.* down here the flinching puddle is louder — not a sound, a feeling in the pad-skin, a tick-tick coming up through the wet. i keep the wall on my ribs. never the open. taste the air with a half-open mouth: grease, copper, and something new, cold and flat and clean like the box that gives water. i follow the clean.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the clean-cold pulls you toward the trench mouth where the alley opens on a plaza. the tick-tick in your pads sharpens into a rhythm you know in the spine before the ears: rotor. the flinching puddle wasn't a light, it was a reflection — a low patrol drone drifting the plaza on its slow grid, belly-lamp swinging, throwing that pink stutter down every standing puddle it crosses. it hasn't turned up the trench. yet. the clean smell is the plaza's washed concrete, and past the drone, mounted high, a NekoCorp board murmurs through a blown speaker: *your loyalty tier is... your loyalty tier is... please remain a valued —* then swallows itself in static.

explorer (DYSTOPIA)*flat. instantly. belly to the wet concrete, every hair on my spine deciding to stand without asking me.* the rotor-tick owns the whole plaza now, i can feel it walk across my back like a paw that isn't there. i do not run — running is a shape they know, a warm fast shape. i become the trench instead. *ears pinned, eyes half, breath small.* i wait for the belly-lamp to swing away, counting its swing the way i count anything that could kill me: not with numbers, with the gap between one wrong-light and the next.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)good. the lamp swings off you, drags its pink smear to the far wall, and in the moment the plaza goes un-lit you get the whole thing in one held breath: wet black glass, a dead fountain, and up on the west ledge — still, deliberate, not-drone, not-rat — a cat-shape. sitting. facing you across the plaza with two flat mirror-coins where eyes should be, catching the neon and giving nothing back. it does not flinch at the drone. the drone does not flinch at it. the belly-lamp starts its swing back toward your trench, and the mirror-eyed shape tips its head one degree, like it already knew you were counting.

explorer (DYSTOPIA)*the mirror-eyes are a wall i can't smell past and that is its own kind of loud.* not-prey, not-crew, not-afraid-of-the-flying-thing — that last one is the part that pins my ears flatter than the drone did. anything the rotor doesn't scare is a thing i don't have a shape for. *i break the stare first, because staring is a promise and i'm not making it.* the belly-lamp is coming back. i use the drone's own swing as my cover, slide two body-lengths deeper into the trench on the dark side of a dead crate, and put stone between me and both of them. let the shiny one keep the plaza. i only ever wanted the way down the wall.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)stone takes the rotor-tick down to a rumor in your teeth. the crate you've tucked behind reeks of long-gone fish-oil soaked so deep into the wood it's almost warm, almost safe. when you glance back the west ledge is bare — no shape, no mirror-coins, just wet dark and the drone finishing a swing over nothing. behind the crate the trench keeps going down: a slit where the wall never fully met the ground, breathing up at you cold and mineral and old, no grease in it, no corp in it, no light. the kind of dark that was here before the towers. your whiskers find the gap's edges before your eyes do. it's exactly wide enough.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*mineral-cold on the whiskers, no corp in it — that absence is the most honest thing the night has said to me.* but honest and safe aren't littermates. i don't take a hole i haven't heard first. *i crouch at the slit, one ear folded into it, and just... listen down.* drip. the slow talk of water on stone. no rotor. no breath that isn't mine. no tick in the pad. *tail gives one slow low sweep — decision-tail.* i go in front-first but slow, shoulders reading the width the whole way, back feet still owning the light behind me until the dark proves it wants me more than the plaza does.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the slit takes your shoulders like it was measured for them and then opens — the drip-sound blooms outward, a bigger black than the gap promised. cool air moves against your face, meaning somewhere ahead there's another mouth, another out. under-paw goes from wet concrete to something gritted and ancient, dry in the center of the path where nothing's dripped in years. the neon can't follow you here; the dark is total and even, and your eyes give it up and hand the whole job to whisker and ear and nose. far ahead — faint, warm, wrong-for-down-here — a thread of scent: milk. not the flat clean synthetic-milk of the billboards. real. animal. and with it, almost too quiet to be a sound at all, the smallest possible mew.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*everything in me that was a wall becomes a door.* real milk and a kitten-mew and the whole hard cold night falls off my back like water. *i don't creep now — i pour forward, low and quick and certain, the way you only move toward the one thing worth being seen for.* whiskers wide, nose leading, the grit soft under the pads. i answer the mew with the small chirrup i keep for exactly this and nothing else, the one that means *coming, hold, coming.* the towers can have their rotors and their mirror-eyed strangers and their swallowed loyalty tiers. down here in the old dark there's warm milk and something small, and that, tonight, is the only territory i want.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the chirrup goes out ahead of you into the dark and — a beat, a held nothing — comes back doubled. two mews now, then three, a thin ragged little chorus tuning up in the black, and the milk-warmth swells around your face like a room you can't see the walls of. the grit gives way to something soft, dry, torn-cloth soft, nested. your pads find it and it holds your weight kindly. no rotor reaches here. no board murmurs here. just the small ones and the warm and your own breath, and above you, so far above it might as well be another cat's dream, the city keeps redrawing its lights for no one, and does not know, and does not need to, that the night belongs to whoever moves quietest — and tonight, quietest, that's you.
