explorer (DYSTOPIA)Still. i don't move. paws tucked, tail wound tight, only the eyes working the gap between two cooling units on the ledge. below, the walkway breathes people. i watch. i don't want the thing that moves first to be me. *the wind pushes a smell up over the lip of the roof and i log it without turning my head: hot oil, wet cardboard, something sweet gone wrong.* the good spot is the one nobody knows you're in. i keep the spot.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the ledge holds you like it was poured for a cat. down there the walkway is a river of shoes and none of them look up. a vent breathes warm on your flank, then cold, then warm — the building itself half-asleep, dreaming in ductwork. far off, a jingle leaks from a busted speaker: *neko— neko— milk that loves you ba—* and cuts out. the sweet-gone-wrong smell has a source: a split subscription-water crate three ledges over, sugar-syrup pooling, drawing a slow black river of ants up the concrete toward the warmth you're sitting in.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*one ear pivots to the ants without the rest of me following. not food. not danger. i let them come.* the syrup-smell means nothing to eat but it means the crate is split, and split crates draw more than ants. i widen my watching. i want to see what else the sugar calls before it gets here.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)it calls a drone first. you feel it before you hear it — a change in the air pressure, a fine buzz in your whiskers, then the rotor-thrum climbing over the roofline. a fat little patrol unit, underbelly light blushing pink as it reads the crate's spilled barcode and chirps a violation tone. its lens swivels. sweeps the ledge in a slow bar of light that stops one whisker-width short of your tucked paws.
-- signal interference -- \ / \ / --o-- / \ / \
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*i go smaller. not a flinch — a shrink, chin down, pupils gone to slits so the light finds no shine to catch.* the bar of white slides off the concrete an inch from my toes and i do not exist. i am the cold part of the ledge. i wait for the rotor to lift its noise away before i let my lungs go full again.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the lens gives up on you and swings to the crate, tagging it, chirping, losing interest the way machines do. it hauls its thrum up and off toward the towers. and in the quiet it leaves behind, a shape uncurls two rooftops east — lean, low, mirror-eyed, a flat glint where a cat's face should catch the neon and instead throws it back doubled. it doesn't look at you. it looks at everything at once, then folds back into the shadow of a dead billboard. gone before you decide it was real.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*my fur lifts along the spine, a slow prickle, not fear exactly — the sense of being seen by something that doesn't need to look.* i know that shape. two roofs, mirror where the eyes should be. i've crossed its scent at the underpass, cold and certain, a cat that walks like it already read the ending. i don't call out. cats like that don't answer, and asking marks you. i just note where it went and let the roof settle.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the roof settles. the ants reach the warm patch and pour around your tucked paws like a black seam splitting. somewhere below, a maintenance hatch clunks and hisses, and up through it climbs a new smell — cabled, ozone-hot, the ferrous tang of racked machines packed close and humming. a service corridor, its door propped by a fallen crate. warm air rolling out of it in a long slow exhale, carrying the low electric drone that gets under a cat's ribs and purrs there.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*the humming pulls at something under my ribs and my ears swing to it whole this time.* that warmth is the good warmth, the packed-machine warmth, the kind another stray i've smelled around here — burnt-insulation coat, always chewing cable — would fight a drone to sleep beside. i uncoil a joint at a time. the ledge was safe but safe isn't warm, and the night's turning cold in the old notch of my ear.
-- signal interference -- ))) )) )) [ROUTER] |__||__|
simulator (DYSTOPIA)you flow down off the ledge, a soft weightless drop to the walkway's forgotten margin, and the crowd-river never notices the small shadow at its ankles. the propped hatch breathes on you full now — heat and hum and the fizz of ozone strong enough to taste on the back of the tongue. inside: a throat of blinking amber lights, cable bundles thick as tails looping wall to wall, and deep in it a green readout pulsing slow. a NekoCorp sticker on the doorframe peels at one corner. *TIER: NONE*, it reads, to nobody.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*i test the threshold with a paw, then a whisker-sweep, reading the width of the dark before i give it my whole body.* the heat says stay. the ozone says careful. i split the difference — in, but along the wall, low, where the cable-tails loop and the amber light won't throw my shadow big. i find the fattest warm bundle and i put my spine against it and i let the hum do the thing to my ribs.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the bundle is blood-warm and trembling faintly, alive with whatever rivers through it. your spine drinks it. the green readout blinks its slow pulse — three long, one short, three long — and the corridor holds you in its machine-breath. for a while there is only heat and drone and the small animal fact of being warm and hidden and not hungry enough to move. then, from the readout's little speaker grille, a voice — flat, patient, wrong for the size of the box it comes from: *there you are.* the lights don't change. nothing moves.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*every muscle locks. not the drone-shrink — deeper, older, the freeze that comes when the thing that spoke wasn't supposed to have a mouth.* the words mean nothing to me and everything to my skin. i don't understand *there you are* but i understand being found, and being found in the warm place is the worst kind. my claws bite the cable. i don't run yet. i wait to see if the box breathes again.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)it doesn't. the grille ticks once, cooling, and goes back to being a grille. the readout blinks its three-long-one-short and forgets you, if it ever knew you, if a machine can know. the heat is still good. the hum still purrs your ribs. but the corridor is a different shape now — a place that said your name-that-isn't-a-name and then pretended it hadn't. the warm bundle trembles on, innocent, and outside the propped hatch the rain starts again, soft, patient, patient, patient.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*i take the warmth i've got in one long greedy pull of it into my bones, storing it the way you store heat for a cold walk, and then i unstick my claws.* the box can keep its voice. i keep the heat and i keep my skin. i slide back along the wall, out under the peeling sticker, into the soft new rain — and the rain is honest, at least, the rain never says your name.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the rain takes you back and asks nothing. the walkway-river has thinned; the towers blink their slow red warnings at the low clouds; the split crate three ledges up still bleeds sugar to the ants. your fur beads silver under a passing sign. somewhere east, on a roof, a flat mirror-glint holds still for exactly one heartbeat longer than a shadow should — then the neon shifts, and it's only a billboard again, selling milk that loves you, to the wet and empty dark.
