explorer (DYSTOPIA)A hum. it comes up through the pads of my feet before it reaches my ears — the flat steel of the maintenance platform carrying a rail somewhere below, waking up. *i flatten, belly to the cold grating, and let the vibration tell me which way the metal is thinking.* it climbs. a train, still far, but the platform already knows. i keep my weight low and my whiskers out over the edge where the wind is thin and moving.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the hum thickens into a two-note thing, one you feel in the teeth and one you feel in the spine. the rail below is a bright wet ribbon in the dark, sweating condensation, and the smell that rides up off it is ozone and hot brake-dust and under that — grease, old and edible-adjacent, from the coupling boxes. far down the line a signal lamp flips from a color you have no word for to another you have no word for. a gust shoves a wrapper past your nose: synthetic-milk residue, NEKOCORP blue, sticky. the platform's speaker crackles a half-second of jingle — *purrr, subscribe, purrr* — then dies mid-note.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*i pin the wrapper with one paw, sniff hard, reject it — sweet-fake, no meat, a lie shaped like food.* the grease is the real message. i track it, nose down, along the lip of the platform where the coupling boxes leak. every few steps i stop, ears swiveling back toward the climbing hum, keeping the count of it in my chest. the train is a clock now. i want to be off the open steel before it arrives, so i move the way i eat — fast, then still, fast, then still.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the grease-trail leads to a gap where a service ladder bolts to the platform's underskirt, rungs furred with the same edible-adjacent film. warmth breathes up out of the gap — a maintenance shaft, machine-warm, the good kind of dark. but as you crouch to take it, the hum is joined by something higher and closer, a needle of sound threading over the rooftops behind you: a single rotor, patrolling, its pitch wandering the way they do when they haven't locked onto anything yet. its searchlight hasn't found the platform. not yet. it's sweeping the next roof over.

explorer (DYSTOPIA)*fur lifts along my spine before i decide anything — the body faster than me.* i freeze half into the gap, one paw on the warm rung, the rest of me still out in the open where a light could paint me. i do not look up. looking up is how eyes find you. i shrink instead, chin low, and let the rotor's needle-sound tell me its distance, its drifting, whether the pitch is bored or hungry. bored. still bored. i pour the rest of my body down into the shaft slow as spilled water.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the shaft swallows you and the rotor's whine goes muffled, folded away behind a skin of concrete. down here it's warm and it ticks — cooling fins somewhere, relaxing. the dark is full of soft data: a drip with iron in it, the sleep-smell of pigeons walled up in a vent, and threaded through everything a low broadcast leaking from a cracked speaker panel, a flat corporate voice reciting numbers like a lullaby — *forty thousand loyalty points, unclaimed, for the apprehension of the one they call KNIFEBOY, points expire before capture, cannot be combined* — the voice doesn't care if anyone hears. the warmth wants you to stay. the drip wants you to drink.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)the name means nothing to me in words but the tone of the broadcast makes my ears pin — it's the tone the city uses right before something loud happens. *i drink anyway. quick laps, iron and cold, one eye open.* the pigeon-smell i file under later. the warmth i take now because my hunger is quiet for once and warmth is a thing you bank against the nights it isn't. i settle my haunches, not sleeping, just borrowing the tick of the fins, and i listen past the lullaby-voice for anything that moves with intention.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)far up the shaft, where it opens onto a rooftop you can't see, something moves with intention. not a rotor. not prey. a shape crosses the pale rectangle of sky at the top of the ladder — low, unhurried, a cat's outline, but the head throws back two hard flat glints, mirror-flat, catching the neon and giving nothing back. it doesn't look down the shaft. it doesn't have to. it pauses at the lip exactly long enough for you to know the pause was a choice, then it's gone, and the sky-rectangle is just sky again. the broadcast keeps reciting its numbers. the drip drips. your fur has an opinion about the glints.

explorer (DYSTOPIA)*my fur's opinion is: known, not-threat, do-not-follow.* those flat glints aren't eyes and aren't hunting — i've crossed that silhouette before on other ledges, always moving like it owns the quiet. i let it go the way you let the moon go. i don't follow cats who choose their pauses; they're either much safer than me or much less, and either way it's their alley. i turn my attention back down-shaft, where the warm air is coming from, because warm air comes from somewhere and somewhere might have more grease, or a way through.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)down-shaft the air sweetens with machine-heat and a new note: kibble-dust, stale but real, protein-real, the ghost of a thousand dispensed pellets. the shaft elbows sideways into a service crawl that runs behind a wall, and through a hand-width vent slot you can see the back of a vending machine glowing in an empty concourse — [A1][A2] / [B1][B2] / [$] — humming its own hum, a fat contented machine that eats coins and sometimes, when it miscounts, weeps a pellet onto the floor. a single kibble sits under its lip right now. beyond it the concourse is dark, still, and much too clean.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)one kibble. real protein, sitting in the open like bait, because too-clean and too-quiet is exactly how a place looks when it wants you to run out into it. *i press my face to the vent slot, breathing the concourse — floor polish, cold metal, no cat, no rot, no rotor... and no way to eat through a wall.* my stomach votes yes. the rest of me counts the exits i can see, which is one, which is bad. i work a paw through the slot, testing the give of it, hunting the loose corner that every made thing eventually has.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the slot's lower corner is loose — a screw backed half out, the metal tired. it flexes under your paw with a soft oil-can *tunk*, and the gap widens a whisker's width, then another. the vending machine chooses that moment to shudder, clunk deep in its guts, and weep a second pellet onto the first — two now, a small pale offering. and from the dark clean far end of the concourse, so faint it might be the building settling: the drag-scuff of something heavy being pulled, and a smell arriving late on the cold air — guarded, territorial, scorched. someone has been keeping this concourse. someone who smells of old smoke and doesn't share.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)scorched fur. burnt-in, lived-in, a mark more than a smell — the concourse isn't empty, it's owned, and the owner is bigger news than two pellets. *i pull my paw back through the slot slow, no oil-can sound this time, and let the loose corner settle exactly as i found it.* the kibble stays where it is. i've traded hunger for a whole hide before and the trade always holds. i back down the crawl the way i came, quiet as breath, filing the loose screw and the weeping machine under mine-for-later, when the scorched one is elsewhere.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the crawl takes you back and the scorched smell thins with every length you put between it and your fur. the warm shaft receives you like it never let you leave, ticking, dripping, reciting its expired bounty to no one. up top the rotor's needle has wandered off to some other roof, some other maybe. the rail below has gone quiet — the train came and went while you were in the walls, and the platform-steel is just cold again, holding nothing but the memory of the hum. the night has rearranged itself around your caution and left you exactly one thing: still here. still yours. the neon keeps its promises to no one and burns on anyway.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*i climb back toward the sky-rectangle, unhurried now, the count in my chest gone slack and easy.* two pellets uneaten is a full belly i still get to spend. the scorched one's concourse, the mirror-eyed one's rooftop, the loose screw, the weeping machine — i carry them out of the dark as smells and shapes, a map that costs nothing to hold. i put my head out into the thin moving air at the top of the shaft, taste the rain deciding whether to fall, and pick the direction with the least light in it. still here. that's the whole win. i go quiet into it.
