explorer (DYSTOPIA)Another cat has been here. not now — but the ledge remembers. *i press my nose to the cold lip of the rooftop and the mark blooms up at me, sour and male and days old, sprayed right where the parapet turns.* this is a line. someone drew it. and someone drew it *over* mine. i don't move to fix it yet. i sit back on my haunches at the exact center of the wet concrete and let my eyes do the work first — the whole grid laid out below, every window a lit tooth, and somewhere in all that shine is whoever thinks this edge is theirs.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the city answers slow, the way a big cold thing answers. wind comes up the face of the tower and hands you the whole district at once: fry-oil and ozone and the flat mineral breath of ten thousand cooling units. the sour mark isn't the only one — under it, fainter, is *you*, older than a week, so this ledge has been yours and taken and yours again more times than either of you counts. far off, low, a rotor. not close. and the window-teeth below aren't all still — one goes dark, then its neighbor, a slow blink moving left along the forty-first floor like something is walking behind the glass, putting out the lights as it passes.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*my eyes lock onto the blinking dark and hold. this is what i am for.* the moving-out of the lights isn't wind, isn't chance — it has a rhythm, a stride, and stride means a body, and a body i can name is a body i can avoid or use. i flatten low along the parapet, mirrored eyes catching the neon and throwing it back so the night can't read me the way i'm reading it. i don't need to be closer. i need to be *unseen while seeing.* i wait for the pattern to finish and tell me where the thing is going.

BASED
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the pattern finishes and lies. the last light on the forty-first blinks out and then every window on that floor comes back at once, hard white, a held breath released — a cleaning cycle, a shift change, nothing walking at all. the city does this: makes a shape out of coincidence and dares you to have believed in it. but while your eyes were down there, something up *here* changed. the sour male scent has warmed. fresh over stale. a weight has settled on the water tank behind you, soft enough that only the tank heard it, and the tank passed it down through the roof into your paws as one small deliberate tremor. you are being watched by something that also knows how to watch.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*i do not turn. turning is telling.* the tremor came up my left paw and i let my ear rotate to it alone, slow, the rest of me carved from the same concrete i'm lying on. behind and above. the tank. he thinks the height is his advantage — thinks looking down is the same as seeing. it isn't. i've spent my whole life learning the difference. i keep my mirrored gaze pointed out at the grid like i'm still fooled, and under the fur every muscle files itself into two lists: the way off this roof, and the second, closer way, if he wants the mark settled tonight.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)he waits too. he's good — you can respect a thing and still mean to leave it behind you. the standoff has a smell of its own, a tightness. then the choice gets made for both of you: from the street canyon a real one rises now, no coincidence in it, a drone dropping into a search-spiral, rotor-wash and a white cone that swings up the tower wall floor by floor, climbing. it will crest this roof in the time it takes to breathe twice. every scrap of shadow up here just became currency, and there are only so many pockets of it, and you both know exactly where they are.

explorer (DYSTOPIA)*and now i turn — because now it doesn't matter that he sees me move, only that i move first.* the best shadow is the tank's own lee, the wedge of dark he's crouched beside, and i'm already pouring toward it low and flat, not challenging him, *sharing* — two cats, one cone of light climbing, the old math that says enemies at the same edge become nothing at all when the light comes. i tuck into the black an arm's length from his heat, both of us pressed to cold steel, and the white cone breaks over the parapet and washes the roof to bone.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the light passes over the tank and finds two nothings. it lingers — the drone's cone holds on the empty center of the roof where the fresh mark and the old mark cross, like even the machine can smell a border it can't parse — then swings on, up and over, hunting some other warmth. rotor-thrum fades down the far side. in the dark beside you the other cat's breathing evens out. he shifts, just once, and his shoulder is briefly against yours, and neither of you makes it a fight. the ledge stretches out ahead, re-blacked, un-owned again, big enough. from below, a NekoCorp jingle leaks up through a cracked vent — *purr-fect savings, all night long* — warping flat, then gone.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*i wait until his breath is slow, then i rise without hurry.* the light taught us the same lesson at the same second and that's a kind of truce older than any mark. i walk to the crossing-point, where his sour meets my stale, and i don't spray over him and i don't erase him. i sit. i add mine *beside* — a line that says two, not one, not none. then i take the low way down, the drainpipe warm from the day, and i let him have the height. height was never the thing. seeing was. and i saw enough tonight to know this edge holds room for two who both know how to disappear.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the drainpipe hands you down through its own dark, one warm ring at a time, into the wet exhale of the alley. behind and above, the roof keeps its new arithmetic: two marks, side by side, drying in the neon. the city doesn't notice, or it notices everything and files it — a billboard three towers over cycles to a cat's silhouette in mirrored glasses, some ad you'll never buy, gone before you can hate it. the grid breathes on. somewhere a light blinks out, then its neighbor, and this time you don't even look. you already know what it is, and what it isn't.
