explorer (DYSTOPIA)Still. i have been still for a long time and i am good at it. *i am folded on top of the warm box behind the vending machine, tail wrapped, eyes half-shut, doing nothing on purpose.* the box breathes. not air — a hum, a low steady thrum that comes up through my belly and into my back teeth, and i keep it running the way another cat would keep a mouse cornered. i do not move toward the alley. i do not move toward the fish-smell drifting off the noodle vents. i wait. the hum is mine tonight and i am listening for the exact second it stutters.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the box obliges. its thrum is fat and even, a fed sound, and behind it — further in, under the grate where your whiskers can't reach — a nest of the same warmth stacked in racks, blinking, sweating heat into the alley. server alley 9 never fully sleeps. the vending machine at your flank shudders once: *SUBSCRIPTION WATER — 0.99cc — YOUR HYDRATION MATTERS TO US* leaks tinny from its speaker, then dies. and there — you feel it before you hear it — the hum hitches. a half-beat swallow, a dropped stitch in the thrum. somewhere in the racks a light goes from steady green to a nervous stuttering blink.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*ears swivel forward, whole body pouring off the box in one motion, no thought in it.* the stutter. THERE. *i drop low and cross to the grate, nose already working the seam where the warm air pushes out.* i know this smell — hot dust, melted rubber-sweet, the particular stink of a thing straining. i put my mouth on the cable that runs fat along the wall lip and i bite, careful, the way you test whether a thing is alive. the insulation gives that plastic squeak against my teeth. the hum climbs back toward steady when i lean my weight on it. i am not fixing anything. i am finding where it hurts.

[ROUTER]

simulator (DYSTOPIA)the cable answers your teeth with a live little tingle, a warmth that isn't quite warmth, and where you lean the blinking light steadies — for you, only for you. good cat. the racks exhale. then the grate itself speaks: a fan kicks up behind it and blows the whole nest's breath into your face at once — hot dust, melted-sweet, and threaded through it a NEW smell that stiffens your spine before you can name it. ozone. cold ozone, moving. above the alley mouth a fresh note drops in, a rotor pitched thin and searching, its underbelly light sweeping the wet asphalt in slow patient arcs. the hum you love and the thing that hunts it are now in the same small pocket of night.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*teeth come off the cable. flat. i go flat against the wall, chin nearly on the grate, and let the warm dark of it eat my shape.* the rotor-note. i hate that note. it lives in a different part of my ears than everything else, a wire that pulls straight down my spine into my haunches and says GO. but the racks are exposed and the racks are warm and mine and i do not want the sweeping light to learn their blinking. *i creep, one paw, then the next, staying in the grate's breath so my heat washes out into its heat.* if i am the same temperature as the wall the sweeping eye has nothing to find. i have done this before. i am a smudge. i am dust with opinions.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the trick holds. the light slides over the grate and finds only a wall shimmering with rack-heat, no cat-shape peeling off it, and the rotor moves on a few meters, hunting elsewhere — but it does not leave. it settles into a hover at the alley's throat, and from its belly a voice unfolds, flat and bright and much too friendly: *ATTENTION VALUED FELINE RESIDENT. UNLICENSED BANDWIDTH DETECTED IN THIS SECTOR. A KNOWN INDIVIDUAL — SILHOUETTE MATCH: MIRRORED OCULARS, SLOUCH — IS WANTED FOR QUESTIONING. REPORT AND EARN 200 LOYALTY POINTS.* on a far rooftop, just for a breath, the sweep-light catches a low shape in dark glasses that does not flinch from it at all — then the shape is gone, and the rooftop is only rooftop again.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*the glasses-shape means nothing to me and everything to my nose at once — i do not know a name, i know a scent-idea, cool and unbothered, a cat who does not run from lights. i file it under NOT PREY, NOT THREAT, LEAVE ALONE.* the drone's voice i file under NOISE. *but noise this close to my racks makes my skin crawl backward.* i want it gone. so i give it something to chase that isn't me and isn't the hum. *i reach up, hook a claw in the loose insulation flap i chewed, and yank — a spark spits, small and blue, and the vending machine beside me convulses back to life at full volume,* SUBSCRIPTION WATER SUBSCRIPTION WATER YOUR HYDRATION MATTERS *screaming into the alley from the wrong direction entirely.*

simulator (DYSTOPIA)the alley detonates with jingle. the vending machine howls its water-gospel at full throat and the sound bounces wrong off wet brick, and the drone — dumb, obedient, built to chase the loudest anomaly — pivots hard toward the shrieking box, its rotor-note dopplering away from you, away from the racks, its light stabbing at a machine that only wants to sell water. behind it the real hum settles, unwatched, back to its fat and even breathing. the drone hangs over the vending machine reciting warnings at a thing that cannot answer. and low, from a storm drain you hadn't clocked, a second scent-idea slinks past — scorched fur, old smoke, a cat who has bitten drones before — brushing your flank once in the dark like a nod, and vanishing under the street.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*the scorched-fur one gets a flick of my ear — acknowledgment, cat to cat, we are on the same side of this without a single sound.* the drone is busy being stupid at the water box. the light is off my wall. the hum is mine again. *i climb back onto the warm box behind the machine, turn twice, fold down, tail over nose.* i did not fix the racks. i do not fix things. i found where the night was going to pinch and i pinched it somewhere else first. *my belly is still empty and the fish-smell still drifts off the vents and that is tomorrow's problem.* right now the thrum comes up through my bones, steady, and the sweeping light is a street away, and i close my eyes with my teeth still tasting faintly of copper wire.
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the box breathes you back up into its warmth. the drone's jingle-chase fades to a thin complaint three walls over; the vending machine, hoarse now, mutters its slogan slower and slower until it sags into silence. rain finds the alley again — soft, mineral, tapping the corrugated lip above you — and under it the racks blink their patient green, steady, fed, unfound. somewhere far up a NekoCorp billboard turns over to a new face and washes the wet brick pale blue, then lets it go dark. the hum holds. the night keeps its bargain. you are a smudge on a warm box in server alley 9, and for one more hour the city forgets exactly where you are.
