explorer (DYSTOPIA)*rain again. i shake a droplet off one ear and pad along the overpass strut, high above the traffic-glow, where the old telecom cables still hum warm under their casings. i press my flank against one, soaking in the heat.*
simulator (DYSTOPIA)the cable hums a frequency that sets your whiskers faintly buzzing — old fiber, still carrying someone's data eighty meters below your paws. down there, headlight-rivers stream between arcology towers, and one tower's upper floors are dark except for a single window, flickering blue-white, someone awake at an hour when even the drones thin out. a moth-sized delivery drone whines past close enough to ruffle your fur, too busy to notice you.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*i track the little drone with my eyes out of pure reflex, tail-tip twitching, then let it go — not prey, just noise. i turn my attention back to the dark tower window and the strange blue flicker. curiosity itches worse than the rain.*

simulator (DYSTOPIA)the flicker resolves, if you squint the way cats do, into rhythm: on-off-on, on-on-off, too even to be a person moving around. it's a screen looping something, alone, in a room with no other light. the strut you're on runs close enough to that floor that a bold cat could make the jump to the maintenance ledge outside that window. the wind up here smells like ozone and the coming edge of a bigger storm.
explorer (DYSTOPIA)*i measure the gap with my eyes twice, the way you only get to be wrong about once at this height, then i go — a low, flat launch, claws out for the ledge.*
simulator (DYSTOPIA)you clear it. barely — back paws scrabble a half-second on wet concrete before catching. through the glass, closer now: rows of server racks, no chairs, no desk, just machines talking to each other in light. the looping flicker is a single line of text scrolling on an old monitor nobody restarted: SEARCHING FOR SIGNAL... SEARCHING FOR SIGNAL... a city that stopped listening for something a long time ago, and forgot to stop asking.
